Lewis A. McArthur was born on April 27, 1883 in The Dalles, Oregon. He graduated from the University of California in 1908. McArthur was employed at Pacific Power and Light Company from 1910 to 1948. He served as a member of the Oregon Geographic Names Board (1914-1949) and as the editor of the authoritative book on the origins of Oregon place-names, "Oregon Geographic Names", first published in 1928.
