Advocacy Issues Files, 1963-1988.

Advocacy issues files (1963-1988) of the Office of Public Relations and its successor body, the Office for Governmental Affairs, contain correspondence, memoranda, reports, statements and testimony, newsletters, news articles, news clippings, Congressional member lists, and Office and U.S. government publications regarding the Offices' efforts in voicing and promoting the Lutheran stance on issues and policy before the U.S. government and in informing the Lutheran Council in the USA (LCUSA) and its members of government actions, debates, and issues. The collection contains Office testimony, statements, letters and memoranda to Congressmen and others, and records concerning the Offices' work on the issues of school prayer, and the federal budget. Correspondents include Office Executive Directors Robert E. Van Deusen. Robert L. Anderson, and Charles V. Bergstrom; other Office staff; government officials, including Congressional members and their staffs; LCUSA General Secretaries George F. Harkins and John R. Houck; LCUSA division directors and other staff; LCUSA participating church body presidents and representatives; Lutheran, ecumenical, and government organizations and agencies; and Lutheran pastors and lay persons.

Anderson received his B.A. from KU in 1926, his M.A. from KU in 1931 and his Ph.D. from Illinois in 1933. He joined the faculty of KU in 1945 in the Department of History, reaching full Professor status in 1949. He served as Chairman of the department from 1949-1968. He retired in 1968 and died in 1971.
