The collection is comprised primarily of the correspondence of John Edwin Bakeless to his wife, Katherine Little, prior to their marriage. The letters concern Bakeless's student life at Williams College and Harvard University, and his activities while serving in the United States Army training schools at Camp Devans, Mass., and Camp Lee, Va. Williams College Greek exams and a scrapbook are also included.

John Edwin Bakeless was born on December 30, 1894, in Carlisle, Pa. He married Katherine Little in 1920. Bakeless attended Williams College (1914-1918) and, though his final year was not completed because of enlistment in the army, received his bachelor's degree in absentia in 1918. At the end of World War I, he embarked on graduate studies at Harvard University where he studied Philosophy (M.A. 1920) and English (Ph. D. 1936).
