Chase diaries, 1866-1869.

Three handwritten personal journals, kept by Chase during his service with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey from 1866 to 1869. Chase described his impressions of his work with survey teams in California and Oregon, and of life in San Francisco and other towns. Notable events include the explosion of the Wells Fargo office in San Francisco, 1866, the Cosmopolitan Hotel fire, 1867, a widespread forest fire near Newport, Oregon, 1868, and an Indian attack, 1868.
