This collection consists of the letters, deeds, and survey, dated 1774-1850, of Zachary Taylor. His letters to Col. James Johnson, William Taylor, Gov. William Owlsey, James Taylor, and Orlando Brown include discussions of his nomination for the presidency, Kentucky politics, financing of the Missouri Expedition, Orlando Brown's resignation from his post as Commissioner of Indian Affairs, business, and personal matters. The deeds transferred land in Woodford and Jefferson Counties, Kentucky, from Taylor to John G. Finnie, Jr. and to William Taylor. The survey for Zachary Taylor (Taylor's uncle), dated 1774, is of land Kentucky, and was signed by William Preston.

William Berry Taylor was a lawyer and land speculator who migrated from Botetourt County, Virginia, to Shelby County, Kentucky, in the late eighteenth century. After migrating, Taylor continued to practice law in Virginia as well as Kentucky. Taylor was part of the influential Taylor family that included Colonel Richard Taylor, the James Taylor's, and Zachary Taylor. Zachary Taylor (1784-1850), the twelfth president of the United States. In 1841, he was appointed to the command of the Sourthern Division of the United States. In the spring of 1845, Taylor appointed to command the Army of Occupation stationed in Corpus Christi. In May 1846, Taylor led his army into north Mexico. Following the battle of Monterey, Taylor was ordered to join General Winfield Scott at the siege of Veracruz. Taylor's victory at at the Battle of Buena Vista made him a national hero....

Orlando Brown was born September 26, 1801, in Frankfort, Kentucky, to John and Margaretta Brown. He is a descendent of John Preston of Londonderry (now Northern Ireland) through his father's mother, Margaret Preston. He received an A.B. from Princeton and a law degree from Transylvania University. Brown practiced law in Alabama, but returned to Kentucky and became joint proprietor and editor of the FRANKFORT COMMONWEALTH.
