Theodore Roosevelt letter, 1899 Oct. 17.

This collection is a letter written by Theodore Roosevelt October 17, 1899, from Albany, New York, to Elizabeth Shelby Kinkead of Lexington, Kentucky. The letter is in response to Miss Kinkead's concern that Roosevelt described Isaac Shelby as a "backwoodsman" and "mountaineer" in his "Winning of the West." The terms were considered by her to mean that Shelby was a poor white, but Roosevelt denied that is what was meant.
