The collection contains printed and manuscript material pertaining to the meetings and expeditions of the Lyceum of Natural History. The catalogs of specimens describe a wide variety of animals, plants, minerals, and anthropological samples that were collected by Lyceum members. Administrative records include minutes, account books, and membership lists and reports. Also included are collected materials regarding Lyceum expeditions.

The Lyceum of Natural History was organized by a group of Williams College students, with the aid of Prof. Albert Hopkins, in 1835. The society's stated purpose was "the study of the natural sciences." Members of the society were responsible for delivering research papers, and collecting and cataloging scientific specimens. From 1835 to 1871, the Lyceum sponsored a number of expeditions, to aid in the collection of samples, to such locales as Greenland, Newfoundland, Florida, and South America. ...

Paul Ansel Chadbourne was born Oct. 21, 1823 in North Berwick, Me.
