Irving Van Zandt, Jr., was born on March 30, 1940 in New York, N.Y. He graduated from Williams College in 1931, marrying Helen B. Westermann a year later. Van Zandt became a chemical warfare instructor to members of the French army in North Africa, served as aide de camp to Commanding General of French training, Penoral A.F.
