Mitchell family papers, 1835-1856.

This collection consists mostly of letters, dated 1835-1846, between members of the Mitchell family of Maine, New Hampshire, and Kentucky. Names represented are Philemon Mitchell, Catherine Mitchell, Isaac Mitchell, Martha Mitchell, and M.A. Hull. The letters discuss family news and life in Kentucky. Philemon Mitchell's 1835 letter to his family back in Maine describes the Kentuckians as "the finest people I have yet met with." He mentions a visit to Lexington and his meeting there with Henry Clay. Mitchell also describes Kentucky as an expensive place to live but finds "that the west possesses many advantages in accumulating wealth." The collection also includes a funeral notice, dated Oct. 8, 1856, for Garra A. Graves of Georgetown, Kentucky. One letter is in pieces and another is faded, making both difficult to read.
