Visitors list of the beneficiaries of the Union Benevolent Association, section 1st district, 1856-1860.

A view of charity work in Philadelphia, the book is a record of some of the poor in the mid-19th century and the aid they were given by the Association, such as coal, stoves, wood, shoes, groceries or employment, but also notes when the poor were "unworthy." Addresses of these poor clients are always given; sometimes ethnicity or race or some family history is also recorded. Most of the clients were Irish immigrant women, but some were "colored."
