The Indianapolis Literary Club was organized in January, 1877 for the pursuit of "social, literary, and aesthetic culture," and is still active. Membership is restricted to men, is by invitation only, and has always included notable city residents and leaders. A usual meeting consists of a club member delivering a paper on a topic of his choice, followed by discussion. A lifelong resident of Indianapolis, Ind., Bennett was an entrepreneur, bank director, businessman, clubman, and mystery writer. He inherited the Indianapolis Stove Company and started a solenoid valve company. Bennett was elected to membership in the Indianapolis Literary Club in 1927 and read 11 papers at meetings; many were murder mysteries.
