Papers, 1856-1907 (bulk 1860-1870).

Collection centers around members of the Willard and Bradley families. Included are letters from brothers Henry, John, and William Bradley and from their sister Emily to Margaret. Some are from Margaret's husband and from her mother. Her brothers and husband were Union soldiers and the bulk of the letters to family are from them. Samuel was captain of the 14th Regiment Connecticut Volunteers and John was also in that unit. Henry was in the 1st Regiment, Minnesota Volunteers. William was in the 6th regiment of Connecticut Volunteers. There are other letters, as well as legal documents, financial papers, bills, receipts, pictures, and other miscellaneous items. It is clear that at one point, one family member ran a store and Margaret and Samuel were milliners. Religion played a large part in the letters and they reflect the personal grief suffered when three family members died in the war. Pensions for wives of soldiers are discussed. Other topics include camp life, superior officers, including Sherman, and McClelland, campaigns in which they are involved, and views of African-Americans. One series of letters is from Margaret to her daughter after Margaret has moved to New York to care for relatives. It is also apparent that Margaret taught and was a benefactress of mission work. There are some photos of people from eastern Europe and views of Bucharest, Romania.
