Letter, 1865.

Collection consists of a copy in someone else's handwriting of the Bishop's letter to Dr. George Francis Cushman, author and rector of St. Luke's Church at Cahaba, Ala. Hooker discusses the relationship and organization of the Southern and Northern Episcopal churches, and discusses at length what he feels should be done about the prayer in the Book of Common Prayer for "all in civil authority." The Bishop's stand on the prayer issue resulted in a temporary closing of all Episcopal churches in the state by the federal military, an action that he regarded as state interference in church matters.
