Hand Trading Company and related business records, [ca. 1876-1982].

The series consists of business records of Judson Larrabee Hand and the Hand family of Pelham, Mitchell County, Georgia from ca. 1876-1982. The bulk of the materials pertain to the Hand Trading Company (Pelham, Ga.), and include account books, blueprints, contracts, correspondence, deeds or mortgages, financial records, inventory reports, Directors' minutes, stockholders' minutes and records, personal files, and tax records as well as personal papers of Hand Trading Company officers, often Hand family members. The materials document the development of the company, its activities, and financial status. Additional material in the series document the Hand family's other business interests including fertilizer, livestock, lumber, phosphates, naval stores, railroads, textiles, and tobacco. The series also contains extensive blueprints for the Hand Trading Company (1913), the Pelham Phosphate Company (1911), and the Pelham Manufacturing Company (1900).

Judson Larrabee Hand (1850-1916), businessman and politician, married Emma Collingsworth in 1877. After Emma's death in 1898, Hand married Florence Hollis. Hand established a sawmill and turpentine distillery near Pelham (Ga.) as well as a commissary to serve his employees. The commissary eventually grew into the Hand Trading Company, southwest Georgia's largest mercantile business.
