The collection consists of papers of the De Wolf and Middleton families of South Carolina from 1854-1919. The bulk of the collection (1850s-1860s) consists of correspondence to Nathaniel Russell Middleton and his wife Anna Elizabeth DeWolf Middleton from their children Russell Middleton, Maria Middleton (Doar), Annie Middleton, and Charlotte "Lottie" Middleton. The children wrote mainly from Charleston (S.C), Hayfield Plantation on Sullivan's Island (S.C.), and Bristol (R.I.). The letters discuss social and family news in and around Charleston (S.C.) and Bristol (R.I.), management of the plantation; and its slaves, news of the Civil War, and occurrances of yellow fever. The collection also includes some genealogical information on the DeWolf family and a few photographs.

Nathaniel Russell Middleton (1810-1890), President of the College of Charleston (1857-1880) and member of The House of Representatives of South Carolina. Married Margaret Emma Izard in 1832 and after her death in 1836, married Anna Elizabeth de Wolf of Bristol, Rhode Island in 1842.
