The collection consists of orders of the 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment signed by George A. Mercer from June - September 1863. Special orders No. 54 (June 23) and No. 91 (September 10) from Camp Devant, Isle of Hope (Chatham County, Ga.) concern the arrest of deserters in McIntosh and adjoining counties. Special order No. 207 (August 3) from Savannah, Georgia, designates selected officers and enlisted men to a 15-day duty of enrolling conscripts.

The 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment was organized in January 1863. It was formed through the consolidation of the 1st and 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalions. The men were from the counties of Effingham, Screven, Liberty, Bulloch, Lamar, and McIntosh. The regiment was sent to Mississippi and placed in Wheeler's Cavalry Corps.
