Michael Dennis account book, 1855-1867.

The collection consists of an account book of Michael Dennis for his general store, saw mill, and grist mill in Eatonton, Georgia from 1855-1867. The ledger entries contain customer's name, item purchased, and price for items such as lumber, household goods, food, and clothing. Additional entries pertain to Dennis' diversified business interests and include hiring out of slaves for defense fortifications at Savannah during the Civil War, the sale of beef cattle to the Confederate government, and later repurchase of the hides. After the Civil War, Dennis hired freedmen and entries for their accounts list days worked, wages paid, and deductions for sickness, purchases, and cash paid toward the account.
