The collection consists of records of AFL-CIO Region 8 (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Region 5 (Charlotte, N.C.) from 1940-1974. The regional office administration files (1955-1974) include correspondence and reports detailing the work of Paul Christopher and Carey Haigler at AFL-CIO regional offices. Materials contain information on field representative's organizing efforts and contacts with state, local, and national offices. National office administration files (1955-1974) contain correspondence with national officers including President George Meany, Secretary-Treasurer Lane Kirkland and William Schnitzler. The state and local councils files (1948-1974) consist of correspondence documenting the relationship between the AFL-CIO regional offices; the North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee State AFL-CIO offices; city and county central bodies; and building and trades councils. The company files (1949-1973) contain correspondence for companies with organizing opportunities particularly General Electric and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. The subject files (1940, 1964-1974) contain materials regarding Operation Dixie (1946-1954) and organizing at the Franklin Hosiery Mill. The financial records (1946-1974) are primarily composed of records pertaining to funds for the routine operation of the regional offices (1956-1974) and the CIO Organizing Committee (1946-1953).
