Lafayette McLaws collection, 1837-1977.

This collection consists of documents, photographs, and artifacts relating to the life of Lafayette McLaws. The collection contains military commissions for both the United States Army and the Confederate States Army, along with artifacts from his military service. Also included are letters and partial manuscripts containing primarily Civil War recollections of General McLaws. There are also newspaper and magazine articles written by and about General McLaws. Included in the collection are photographs of the General.

Lafayette McLaws was born in Augusta, Georgia on January 15, 1821. He attended the University of Virginia in 1837, but before he completed his first year he was appointed a cadet at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He graduated from West Point in 1842. McLaws served in the U.S. Army on the Texas frontier and distinguished himself during the Mexican War (1846).
