President Frederick D. Patterson files, 1935-1965.

The collection consists of files of President Frederick D. Patterson of the UNCF from 1935-1965. Includes correspondence, memoranda, and reports. Early materials (1935-1939) illustrate the plight of African American colleges, while files from 1943-1944 provide information about UNCF's organization and first capital campaign including correspondence with Ira F. Lewis of the Pittsburgh Courier. Few materials exist for the period 1944-1956. From 1957-1963, the files contain correspondence with UNCF staff, volunteers, and business leaders; correspondence relating to UNCF local campaigns in Texas; and UNCF's first appeal for support to The Links (the national African American women's service organization). For the period 1964-1965, the files include materials pertaining to budgetary matters, UNCF's second capital campaign, and the relationship between UNCF and the National Urban League.
