The collection consists of the records of Local 48 (Atlanta, Ga.) of the International Typographical Union from 1895-1939. Includes correspondence (1895-1939, 1948-1966), minutes (1901-1939), financial statements (1912-1936), legal documents (1898-1903), and printed material (1905-1939). Materials document the activities of the union including membership campaigns, the series of strikes and lockouts to obtain shorter worker hours (1921-1932), the fight for the 44-hour week (1921-1926), effects of the Depression on the union (1930-1939), and dealings with individual employers. Major correspondents include AFL President William Green; ITU Presidents William Prescott, John McFarland, James Lynch, Charles Howard and Claude Baker; ITU, Local 48 President W.M. Fudge and Secretary Walter Grant; and Georgia Senator Tom Watson.
