The collection consists of records of Local 732 (Atlanta, Ga.) of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) and its predecessor, Local 732 (Atlanta, Ga.) of the Amalgamated Association of Street, Electric Railway and Motor Coach Employees of America from 1940-1981. Includes desk diaries (1940-1950), grievance reports (1947-1961), membership records (1947-1951), minutes (1952-1980), correspondence (1965-1980) and subject files (1955-1981). The desk diaries were maintained by ATU, Local 732 Presidents J.F. Folsom and Jesse L. Walton and describe union meetings, elections, contracts, grievances and race relations in Atlanta's public transportation. Grievance reports document disputes between union members and the Atlanta Transit Company. The minutes contain information on meetings of the local's Executive Board and the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) Board of Directors concerning transit conventions, research reports, working conditions, cost of living allowances, and testing of employees. Additional records include contract proposals and negotiations, summaries of other ATU local union contracts, and financial statements of Local 732 and MARTA.

Organized as the Amalgamated Association of Street Railway Employees of America in 1892, the union was chartered by the American Federation of Labor in 1893. In 1934, it adopted the title Amalgamated Association of Street, Electric Railway and Motor Coach Employees of America then changed to the present name, Amalgamated Transit Union, in 1965.
