The collection consists of the political patronage files of Senator Richard B. Russell from 1933-1970. The records include correspondence and other material relating to the patronage that Russell exercised by virtue of his position as a U.S. Senator. Of particular interest are records relating to Russell's support of Alexander A. Lawrence to the bench of the Federal District Court of South Georgia which caused a rift between Russell and his political ally President Lyndon B. Johnson.
