The collection consists of the early office files of Senator Richard B. Russell from 1931-1938. The general files contain mostly correspondence, telegrams, and printed materials concerning legislative issues. The subject files contain correspondence, telegrams, and printed material relating to a variety of topics. Both subseries document Russell's interests during his first term as U.S. Senator including his support of President Roosevelt's New Deal programs; his interest in imposing a tariff on jute; and his activity on such committees as appropriations, naval affairs, immigration, and manufacturers. The collection also contains some material relating to Russell's term as Georgia Governor (1931-1933).
