Francis Edward Hyland papers, 1949-1968.

The collection consists of papers of Bishop Francis Edward Hyland from 1949-1968. The papers include documents, correspondence, photographs, ephemera, and a scrapbook. The scrapbook is a chronological account of the Hyland years as bishop and is comprised of news articles, invitations, programs, and photographs. Of particular interest is information relating to Hyland's appearance before the Georgia General Assembly to speak against a pending sterilization bill and a pastoral letter, dated February 19, 1961, announcing the integration of Catholic schools.

Bishop Francis Edward Hyland (1901-1968), was appointed auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Savannah-Atlanta (Ga.) in 1949. When the Diocese of Atlanta was created in 1956, he was appointed its first bishop and served until his resignation in 1961. During his tenure, he built numerous chapels in north Georgia, opened two Catholic high schools, and became a strong advocate of social justice.
