The collection consists of a draft of a letter written by Charles H. Olmstead after his release as a prisoner of war at Port Royal (S.C.) in which he notes that although he wrote an official report after Ft. Pulaski was surrendered, no such report was officially filed. He subsequently describes in detail the bombardment, defense, and eventual surrender of the fort. Also included is a copy of the missing official report to Capt. E.P. Lawton dated April 12, 1862 regarding the surrender of Ft. Pulaski, with the names of casualties.

Charles Hart Olmstead (1837-1926), of Savannah, Ga., was a Confederate Army officer and member of the 1st Georgia Infantry Regiment. Olmstead was adjutant of the 1st Georgia Volunteer Regiment and, under the command of Colonel A. R. Lawton, took part in the occupation of Fort Pulaski, Ga., at the mouth of the Savannah River.
