The series consists of records relating to conferences held by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee from 1960-1964. Generally, the types of materials include correspondence, minutes of meetings, various departmental reports, and lists of participants. The series contains records of the organizational meeting held in Raleigh (N.C.) and three subsequent meetings in Atlanta (Ga.) in 1960 as the Coordinating Committee took shape. Between 1961-1964, at least two conferences were held annually and the records reflect the progress the organization made and the challenges it faced.

The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was created in 1960 at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Its purpose was to coordinate the student protest movement. SNCC led voter registration drives in Mississippi and other southern states, held civil rights demonstrations advocating social integration, and sponsored the Freedom Summer of 1964 in Mississippi.
