The collection consists of a plantation book of William Cooke for his plantation on Creighton Island, Georgia from January 1861 - March 1862. Entries include an allowance list for hands and daily entries containing information on the number of hands assigned to a job, description of the weather, and local news or events. The volume also includes entries (1863-1864) and accounts concerning Charles Harris Spalding's probate of his father Thomas Spalding's estate.

James Spalding (1735-1794) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He moved to America circa 1760, first arriving in Charleston, South Carolina. He moved to St. Simons Island, Georgia, in 1763 and established the mercantile firms of James Spalding and Co. in East Florida, McKay and Spalding on St. Simons Island, and Spalding and Kelsall at Sunbury, Georgia.
