Lucy Bates dance collection, 1906-1970.

The collection consists of papers of Lucy Bates relating to her interest in dance from 1906-1970. The papers include correspondence, diaries photographs, printed material, and clippings. The correspondence (1911-1960, with gaps) and diaries (1907-1927, with gaps) document Bates' school days, European trip (1911), and growing interest in dance, its interpretation, and her teaching career. Notable correspondents include Jean Reti-Forbes and Katherine Heyman. The collection also contains programs of plays, concerts, operas, and recitals (1906-1923, 1938) mainly in New York; programs, articles, and photographs pertaining to dancers or dancing; and dance programs, photographs, newsletters, and clippings concerning the Noyes School of Rhythm (Portland, Conn.) from 1913-1970.
