Joseph B. Mahan Jr. papers, [ca. 1952-1979].

The collection consists of papers of Joseph B. Mahan Jr. from ca. 1952-1979. The papers include correspondence, research material, and printed materials. The papers relate to Mahan's involvement in the development of Westville (Ga.); the Columbus Museum of Arts and Crafts; the Lower Chattahoochee Area Planning and Development Commission; and the President's Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. The collection also reflects his research in the history of Eastern North American Indian tribes particularly the Yuchi Indians; early 19th century archaeology; and American pre-history, particularly artifacts indicating pre-Columbian trans-Atlantic culture contacts. Part of Mahan's papers relating to the Lower Chattahoochee Area Planning and Development Commission include records of the Commission's African-American Historic Resources Survey. The records consist of inventory sheets for an architectural survey of black structures in Clay, Muscogee, Stewart, and Randolph counties. The sheets, some with attached photographs, give an architectural description and the historic significance of the structure.
