The collection consists of papers of the Thomas Greene family of Talbot County, Georgia from 1822-1872. The collection includes personal and business correspondence and financial records. Materials relating to Thomas Greene mainly document his personal finances including statements, promissory notes, receipts, and some business correspondence; and records relating to his guardianship of Bryant Fanning's orphans. Within the personal correspondence are Civil War letters written by David and Henry Clay Greene to their mother, Isabella Greene, and sisters. David's letters (with the 27th Georgia Infantry Regiment) are mainly from Virginia during the Peninsular Campaign in Virginia. His letters discuss camp life, news of family and friends, and news of war including the siege of Yorktown, battle of Williamsburg, and activity around Manassas. Henry C. Greene (with the 46th Georgia Infantry Regiment) describes activities around Charleston and Ft. Sumter, South Carolina (January - April 1863) and around Dalton, Georgia (January 1864). Also of interest are letters to Isabella Greene from her sister Gracy Rounswall in Chattooga County (Ga.) discussing family news and the Civil War including the battle of Lookout Mountain (Tenn.).
