Lavender R. Ray papers, 1791-1954 (bulk 1850-1916).

Letters, diaries, account books, and legal documents, created by Ray, his father and brother (both John Ray), his grandfather George M. Lavender, a Floyd Co., GA, settler who traded with the Cherokee Indians, and his brother-in-law Joseph J. Felder. Other correspondents are: Alfred H. Colquitt, Joseph E. Brown, and Hoke Smith. Some of the records cover Lavender Ray's service in the 1st Regiment GA Vols. and the 1st Regiment GA Cavalry. There are photographs of Ray and his home in Newnan and of Alexander H. Stephens (autographed) and a scrapbook of more letters and photographs. Include are his 1891 dental records. Ray's United Confederate Veteran's records include papers from the Newnan Guards and Company A, Wheeler's Cavalry. A large number of "subject files" include Ray's career, business, and organizational records: bills introduced by him in the Senate, political campaign material, General Assembly reunion information, political correspondence, a Newnan Seminary catalog, Agricultural and Industrial Exposition Commissioner appointment, and letters about Speer's Steam Engine. A folder covers Ray's being awarded a degree from the University of North Carolina in 1911.

Lavender R. Ray was born and lived most of his life in Newnan, Coweta Co., GA. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Over the objections of his parents, he volunteered for service in Company A, 1st Georgia Regt. Vols., and saw action as a private in Stonewall Jackson's Corps.
