The collection consists of the letters, books, photographs, radio programs and an agricultural manual written by Carroll County chicken farmer James Roy Martin, who joined the Peace Corp at age 65 in 1965 and spent two years in Peru teaching agricultural skills. The materials contain information on agriculture in Peru; Martin's activities with the SIPA, the national agricultural agency of Peru; and poultry breeding. The correspondence from Martin is mainly to Aubrey Martin of Dalton, Georgia or John Hatch of the U.S. Peace Corps. In his letters, Martin describes the area, his impression of the people, and his activities. The correspondence also contains letters (1961-1964) pertaining to Martin's work with the Board of Missions of the United Methodist Church and teaching at Pittman Community Center (Sevierville, Tenn.). After Peru, Martin returned to Georgia and worked at the Ethel Harpst Home for Children and Youth in Cedartown, and one folder contains a letter, postcards, brochures and other materials relating to the Home. Two of the four boxes contain Martin's books.
