Mary J. Gresham, daughter of John J. Gresham, was born in Macon, Georgia on June 17, 1849. She attended Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia from 1863 to 1865. After graduating from Wesleyan College, Gresham attended a finishing school in Baltimore, Maryland called the Edgeworth School. She married Arthur W. Machen.
