Hermann Hesse letters and postcards to Leni Cahn, and poems, 1908-1948.

The collection contains nine postcards (1938-1948), one note card, nine envelopes (1938-1940),and eight letters to Leni Cahn; one postcard to Simplicissimus periodical, 8 July 1908; three printed broadsides ("Wenn auch;" "Kriegerisches Zeitalter," 1939; "Mussige Gedanken"); a 4-page printed letter, [1946], folio, "Ein Brief nach Deutschland." Also contains two poetry books, Vom Baum des Lebens (a presentation copy signed, with an original watercolor by Hesse) and Zehn Gedichte (presentation copy signed); five newspaper clippings of Hesse's articles and autographed poem published in Sonntags-Beilage, 1948, and unnamed newspapers; and one autographed scrap. Hermann Hesse and his wife Ninon correspond with Leni Cahn about her work with refugees, helping friends and acquaintances to emigrate to the United States and Israel, prior to and during World War II. He laments the inaccessibility and later destruction of his literary work left in Berlin, Germany while he is living in Montagnola, Switzerland. He writes about his own work with refugees and comments on his ill health.
