Photograph of Miss Connie Gilchrist, and letter to Edwin Hatch, 1877.

The collection contains a colored photograph, 1877, of Constance MacDonald "Connie" Gilchrist signed on the verso with Charles Lutwidge Dodgson's distinctive purple initials. Gilchrist was a burlesque stage actress who began her career as a child in pantomime, and later as a skipping-rope dancer (when Dodgson photographed her) but left the stage in the late 1880s to marry and become the Countess of Orkney. Dodgson writes to My dear [Edwin] Hatch, 30 April [1877], sending him an article about "Masters of the Schools," and adds that Miss [Anne Lydia] Bond ("the best photographic colourist living") has sent the colored photo of Birdie [Florence May Balfour] as a sea fairy.
