Wine discusses fiddling traditions, and life in general, between 1920 and 1997 in rural Braxton County, West Virginia. He comments on the variety of fiddling events popular in the communities around Copen and Burnsville, and describes his own fiddle-related family traditions that stretch back to the Civil War era. He also reveals his thoughts on learning, performing, and creating fiddle tunes. The backgrounds of fifty-two of his favorite fiddle tunes are described in detail. The videorecordings in the collections contain Wine performing fiddle tunes.

Wine was born near Burnsville, West Virginia, in 1909, and lived most of his life in the nearby community of Copen. He earned his livelihood largely from coal mining and logging, but between 1923 and 1938 he was active as a fiddler at dances, competitions, and various informal events in central West Virginia.
