The Social Welfare Regional Research Institute at Boston College was founded in 1970 by the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. In 1972 it became a unit of the University, and in 1979 its name changed to the Social Welfare Research Institute. In 1863, a charter from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts authorized five Jesuits of Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus to incorporate as β€œthe Trustees of the Boston College.” Their South End school became the first chartered college to operate in Boston in September 1864, when twenty-two boys – with an average age of fourteen – enrolled and classes began.
