Papers of William Jones Lowndes and family include commonplace book, 1803, reproduced on fiche (M112), re classical reading and moral reflections; letter, 9 Apr. 1818, Washington [D.C.], from [James Monroe], noting departure of Mr. Pinckney from Russia, and offering Lowndes position of ambassador to Russia or minister to Constantinople. Correspondence of family members includes letter, 26 Nov. 1822, Liverpool, A. Hodgeson, to Mrs. William Lowndes [Elizabeth Pinckney Lowndes], Paris, offering his sympathies, and extending invitation to visit the Rathbone family, with whom her husband had lodged in the past. Other materials include letter, 12 Sept. 1829, Charleston, S.C., S[arah] R[utledge] to Mrs. William Lowndes, New York, N.Y., re address delivered by [Charles] Cotesworth [Pinckney, Jr.] to the Agricultural Society at Charleston advocating religious instruction for Negro slaves, noting distribution of the address by Rev. Paul Trapier to friends in the North, describing improvements to a house recently sold by Lowndes, and relaying news of prominent Charleston residents residing at home and away at resorts, including mention of members of the Pinckney, Pringle, Murrey, Nesbitt, Alston, and Deas families. Later items include letter, 16 [July] 1830, Paris, Lyde deNeuville to Madame Elisabeth Lowndes, Charleston, S.C., written in Frenchre travels of family and friends since departure of Lowndes family; and 30 Sept. [ca. 1835], Norwich, [Ct.], anonymous to Rebecca M[otte] Lowndes, rea visit to Boston, and comparison of Boston hospitality verses that of New York.

Paul Trapier, educated at Harvard and the General Theological Seminary in New York, married Sarah Dehon in 1833. Trapier served at St. Andrew's Parish (1830-1835), St. Stephen's Chapel (1835-1840), and St. Michael's in Charleston (1840-1846).
