Abstracts from surveyor's field notes of land contained in Northeastern District, transcribed 1850.

Abstracts were made by Surveyor General's Office from RS 953.005, Federal land surveyor's [sic] field notes, for use in Northeastern Land District Office. Method of marking each corner of an exterior section of quarter section or an interior section of quarter section is specified. Method most frequently used was either post in mound or witness tree described by species, diameter, directional bearing and distance from actual corner. When bodies of water are found in twnship abstract also includes rough plat.

The Northeastern Land District Office was created at Chicago by Congressional act of June 26, 1834.
