Transcripts of field notes and plats for previously unsurveyed islands claimed by the state of Illinois under Swamp Land Act of 1850, 1926-1956.

Survey field notes and plat transcripts for previously unsurveyed islands in the Mississippi, Rock, and Fox Rivers were conducted under U. S. Supervisor of Surveys supervision to determine if islands should be confirmed to Illinois under the 1850 Swamp Land Act. Island survey documents include surveyor name; survey beginning date; surveyor approval by U. S. Supervisor of Surveys with approval date and island legal description; Surveyor's field assistants appointments (i.e., chainmen; axmen; principal assistants); Surveyor's field notes transcripts showing survey dates, shoreline line description, and plat copies. Appended to the field notes are Surveyor's observations on island swamp land designation which include statements from island residents or visitors who were familiar with the area. Beside giving individuals' names, residences, and occasionally, ages, these statements describe the island's natural state and typical water level during the time the declarer resided in or visisted the area. The Surveyor's own observations describe topographical features and vegetation during the survey; and offer his opinion on whether the island would experience periodic overflow in 1850.
