The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was created in 1960 at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Its purpose was to coordinate the student protest movement. SNCC led voter registration drives in Mississippi and other southern states, held civil rights demonstrations advocating social integration, and sponsored the Freedom Summer of 1964 in Mississippi....

Watkins, Hollis, 1941-

Hollis Watkins was born in Lincoln County near Summit, Mississippi, in 1941, the twelfth child of sharecroppers. Mr. Watkins was jailed for participating in the Woolsworth's lunch counter sit-in in McComb and a walk-out at the McComb high school. He also worked with Vernon Dahmer for voter registration and later started the Holmes County Project. He was president of Southern Echo at the time of the interview. Dr. John R. Rachal received an M.A. in English (1973) and Ed. D. in Adult and Community College Education (1979) from North Carolina State University.
