The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was created in 1960 at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Its purpose was to coordinate the student protest movement. Lawrence Guyot, born in 1939, was a civil rights voting registration activist and Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) field secretary. He was also the chairman and delegate of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party to the 1964 Democratic Convention in Atlantic City but was incarcerated while picketing in Hattiesburg.
