Treasurer primarily concerns military bounty land; preemption claims; land patent delivery; Register and Receiver accounts receipt; land purchase entry corrections; purchase money repayment; Illinois Central Railroad land selection; and general land office transactions. Also included are instructions sent shortly after the Shawneetown Land District Office opening which illustrates proper forms for journal; ledger; Receiver's receipts; receipt register; and Register's certificates. After May 2, 1856 correspondence concerns Shawneetown District land that was received and filed by the Springfield Land District Office.

The Shawneetown Land District Office was created by an act of Congress on February 21, 1812. Part of the new district's land had formerly been attached to the Kaskaskia Land District; and a small portion of the Vincennes (Indiana) District was added to Shawneetown after Illinois' boundaries were established.
