San Carlos Agency records, 1869-1930 (bulk 1880-1930).

Incoming and outgoing correspondence, cashbooks, invoices, issues and vouchers relating to the administration of the San Carlo Agency, and showing the management required in directing the Reservation's physical plant and personnel. The correspondence, chiefly from 1887 to 1917, consists of letters between the agent at San Carlos, the businesses involved with the Reservation, and the Office of Indian Affairs. Topics include building construction, construction of the Gila Valley, Globe and Northern Railroad, education and health of Indians, mineral, water and grazing rights to land, relations with surrounding towns, personnel matters, and Indian adaptation to reservation life. Holograph decisions of tribal courts are recorded for 16 cases, May to August 1909, giving offenses committed and sentences rendered in each case. Financial records document operations including accounts of articles issued to Indians, articles sold to employees, property records, and more.

The White Mountain Apache Reservation was established in 1871; in 1896 it was renamed Fort Apache while the remaining segment was called the San Carlos Reservation. The first administrators were civilians appointed by the Office of Indian Affairs (1872-1885); military officers served as agents from 1885 to 1900 when civilian agents were again appointed.
