Consists chiefly of a manuscript by John Marion Selman about his father, John Selman, Sr., a gunfighter. Materials include certificates, copies of family records, correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, and a manuscript by John Marion Selman's daughter Edna Selman Porter (later Edna S. Haines). Correspondents include Franklin Reynolds and Leon Metz.

Texas gunfighter John Wesley Hardin killed his first victim at the age of 15 in 1868. After committing numerous additional murders, often related to drinking and gambling, he was convicted of murder in 1877 and served 15 years' time in Huntsville.
