Subjects include land acquisition; canal route; land surveys; specifications for bridges, locks, dams, gates, valvees and aqueducts; use of steamboats on canal; cost estimates; appropriations; property leases; feeder extensions; railroad and highway bridges; flooding; trespassers; inspections; telephone lines; hunting refuges; drainage problems on adjacent private properties; dredging; reservoirs; game warden authority; canal lands for grazing purposes; bathing beaches; repairs; and transfer of canal. Occasionally included are maps, blueprints, construction specifications, photographs, newspaper articles, memoranda and draft agreement between federal government and State of Illinois for repair, modification and transfer of canal for recreation purposes.
