Collection includes papers, 1821-1866, of Overton Bernard (1798- 1866), Methodist minister of Norfolk and Portsmouth, Va., including correspondence with family members and church associates and related materials concerning his ministerial career and the business affairs of the merchant firm of J. & O. Bernard of St. Louis, Mo., operated by Joab Bernard. Also, includes family correspondence, 1825-1843, of his wife, Mary Jane (Thomas) Bernard (1810-1843) of Portsmouth, Va.; correspondence, 1842-1884, of their daughter, Frances Ann (Bernard) Capps (1826-1885) of Portsmouth, primarily concerning her activities in the Methodist Episcopal Church, the education of herself, her friends, and her children, her role as a wife and mother, and other family relationships); and correspondence, 1846-1900, of her brother, Jesse Talbot Bernard (1829-1909), as a student at Randolph-Macon College, Boydton (later Ashland), Va., and in Tallahassee, Fla.
