Charles Wallace letter : Maxwells Creek [later Coulterville], Mariposa Co., Calif., to his father, ALS, 1851 Aug. [15?].

Letter written in the middle of Aug., to his father in Richmond, Virg., describing, almost poetically, the beauty of California and the value of its gold. Wallace concludes that if Calif. had entered the Union as a slave state, its gold could have been mined more profitably, although competition with white labor might have caused insurrection and bloodshed.
