Records include a letter (1864 September 15) in which G.A. Follin of the Adjutant and Inspector Generals Office in Columbia (S.C.) responds to Col. Wilmot G. DeSaussure's report that no company can be organized out of the 4th Brigade of the S.C. Militia. Follin requests "lists of men liable to duty beyond their Districts from the respective Regts. of that Brigade in order that they be be assigned to companies." Included are the rosters of the following companies: Dorchester County, Cattle Creek, Goose Creek, Indian Field, Four Hole, Wassamassaw, and Dean Swamp; and a sheet totaling the number of men in each company between the ages of 16 and 17 and between 17 and 50. DeSaussure identifies the companies as part of the 18th Regiment of the South Carolina militia.

Lieutenant Colonel Wilmot Gibbes DeSaussure (1822-1886) of the 1st Artillery Regiment of the South Carolina Militia, which was later absorbed into the Army of the Confederate States of America, commanded Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island, December 1860-January 1861, and artillery at Morris Island, March-April 1861, in the harbor of Charleston, S.C.
